"You need to persevere in the right direction"

I am involved in the co-supervision of a PhD student who has about half a year left before needing to finish. Today I was talking to someone about how to prioritize and - more importantly - how then to make sure that the PhD student also sees which priorities there are in the time left. This person wisely said: "It is important to be perseverant in science, but you need to make sure you persevere in the right direction".

And this is of course the most difficult thing (at least it was to me during my PhD): to see where to focus your energy to obtain results.
